Full overview

This program bundle consists of three courses:

Energy Storage Associate Boot Camp 40-Hour NABCEP Advanced Energy Storage Certification Training NABCEP Energy Storage Installation Professional (ESIP) Practice Exam

Course curriculum

Energy Storage Associate Boot Camp

  1. 1

Module 1: History of Energy Storage, Markets and Applications for ESS's, and Safety Basics

    • You will learn about the beginnings of solar PV technology, current markets and applications for the technology, and the basic safety considerations and requirements for solar PV installers. Topics include: different types of PV systems, OSHA, National Electrical Code (NEC), arc flashes, overcurrent protection devices, fall protection, and lockout-tagout (LOTO).
  2. 2

    Module 2: Energy Storage Fundamentals

    • This module covers concepts, definitions, terminology, and formulas related to electricity. It also lays out the science, data, and principles you must understand to grasp how solar energy is collected. Topics include: Ohm's Law, power, energy, voltage, current, batteries, multimeters, measurement, types of DC connections, transmission, insolation data, solar time, sun paths, shading, and solar radiation.
  3. 3

Module 3: Common components for Energy Storage Systems

    • For small and large scale energy storage systems, we will cover some of the top brands, how they work and how they are designed.
  4. 4

Module 4: Various Energy Storage System Topics.

    • In this module we cover virtual power plants, C-rates, supercapacitors, lithium vs. lead-acid batteries, battery discharging, state of charge, 3-phase power, grounding and off-grid systems.
  5. 5

    Module 5: More ESS!

40-Hour NABCEP Advanced Energy Storage Certification Training

  1. 1

Module 1: Introduction to NABCEP ESIP JTA and Applicable Codes and Standards

    • In this opening module you will get to know your instructor, explore various solar resources, do some foundational reading, learn about important terms and concepts that you'll need to memorize or at least familiarize yourself with, and do an in-depth review of the sections of the National Electrical Code (NEC) that relate to solar PV design and installation.
  2. 2

Module 2: National Electrical Code (NEC) - Storage Related Articles

There are many NEC Articles besides Article 690 that are important to know about. This includes:

    • Article 705 Interconnected Power Production Sources
    • Article 706 Energy Storage Systems
    • Article 710 Stand-Alone Systems
    • Article 712 DC Microgrids (712 was merged into 705 in the 2023 NEC, which does not change much on what you do)
    • Article 625 EV Power Transfer System
    • And more!
  3. 3

Module 3: Safety, Wire Sizing, Building Codes and Fire Codes

    • Always good to be safe, so safely size your wires and to understand some of the building and fire codes. For the NABCEP exam, do not worry so much about Bill's Building Codes and Fire Codes, however it is important information and for those of you looking for NABCEP Continuing Education (CE) this is a requirement.
  4. 4

Module 4: National Electrical Code - Article 690

    • This module, you will go through Article 690 of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Note that the very first thing on the ESIP JTA says we should understand PV: ESIP JTA: Domain 1: Development Task 1: Understand the Technologies and Applications Knowledge of: a. Power generation sources (e.g., photovoltaic [PV], engine generator, utility, wind) So, just like with the NABCEP PV exams where we should understand energy storage, with the NABCEP energy storage exam, we should also know PV.
  5. 5

Module 5: Energy Storage Practice Exam

  6. 6

Module 6: Question-by-Question Practice Exam Review

Certification

This course prepares students to take the NABCEP Energy Storage Installation Professional (ESIP) national certification exam.

Materials

All necessary course materials are included.

System requirements

Minimum technical expectations for the online learning environment. Your IT team can use this as a checklist.

Internet connectivity

Cable, Fiber, DSL, or LEO Satellite (i.e. Starlink) internet with speeds of at least 10mb/sec download and 5mb/sec upload are recommended for the best experience.

While cellular hotspots may allow access to our courses, users may experience connectivity issues by trying to access our learning management system. This is due to the potential high download and upload latency of cellular connections. Therefore, it is not recommended that students use a cellular hotspot as their primary way of accessing their courses.
